Meyer Gouda Cheese Ltd.

Ben and Fieke Meyer started Meyer Gouda Cheese Ltd, located on the outskirts of Hamilton, as a family business. Ben and Fieke made cheese on a farm in Holland for 8 years before moving to New Zealand in 1984.

They started making cheese in New Zealand shortly after their arrival. The cheeses we make are all of the Gouda style. The name Gouda refers to a medieval city in Holland named Gouda, where this type of cheese was first developed. Two of our most popular cheeses have cumin also known as leyden and plainĀ Gouda. The addition of clove and cumin mixtures is very old as well, and finds its roots in the Dutch trade routes with Indonesia that where in full swing as early as 1787.
